Boutique style bookstore opens on Bell Creek Road
Books, Beads and More has opened at 8324 Bell Creek Rd. #100 in Mechanicsville. The small boutique style bookstore offers 32 full cases filled with used paperback and hardback copies of America’s favorite literary gems, including children, mystery, paranormal, Western, true crime, cookbooks, romance, chapter books, step books, young adult fiction, and Christian. DVDs and CDs also are available.
Sisters Erin Schilling and Dr. Kelly Hagan, who own Books,Beads and More, offer handcrafted fine jewelry, the specialty of Hagan and her husband, Greg. Kelly is an oncologist and hematologist with Virginia Cancer Institute. However, she said her work in that field is stressful, and, like all professionals who toil under arduous conditions, she said she needed to find a stress reliever. Two years ago, she said she found it: jewelry making. Kelly said she does not focus on simple beading techniques. Rather, she strivesto create one of-a-kind designs. In addition to her collection, her husband Greg has a separate collection of his Argentium sterling silver and handmade glass masterpieces. Erin said she is a lover of the written word and noted the lack of bookstores in the Mechanicsville area.
Together, the family came up with a business model, featuring a relaxed and comfortable bookstore spotlighting Kelly and Greg’s necklaces, bracelets and earrings, as well as local crafts. To date, 11 local artists consign their original work to the store. Current crafts on display — and for sale — include pottery, woodwork, hair bows, journals, soaps, stained glass and mosaics.
